Concrete polishing / Preparation

Concrete floor
grinding.

Controlled mechanical preparation for sound, clean and accurately profiled commercial and industrial floors.

The right system

Preparation is a defined scope, not a finish by default.

Grinding removes surface material to prepare concrete for further polishing, an overlay or another floor system. The required depth and finish depend on what must be removed and the condition of the underlying slab.

Record coatings, laitance, contamination, high spots and repair areas before specifying tooling and waste handling. A ground surface may need further refinement or protection before it is suitable as an exposed floor.

01

Best suited to

Main contractors, facilities teams and refurbishment specialists.

02

Primary outcome

A prepared substrate ready for polishing, overlays or other specified flooring systems.

03

Designed for

coating removal, laitance reduction and surface correction.

Technical overview

What concrete floor grinding means in practice.

Concrete floor grinding is controlled mechanical preparation used to remove laitance, residues or coatings and create the correct profile for the next flooring stage. It can also begin the exposure process for a polished finish.

01

Choose it when

before polishing, overlays or other flooring systems where a clean and mechanically prepared substrate is essential.

02

Check before specifying

required removal depth, dust extraction, edge access, floor tolerances, embedded objects and disposal requirements.

03

Finish expectations

Aggregate exposure and sheen are separate choices. A mock-up should show likely tonal variation, repairs and edge treatment.

04

Cleaning + maintenance

Use neutral cleaning chemistry, suitable auto-scrubber pads and prompt spill removal. Periodic burnishing or guard renewal depends on traffic and the specified finish.

Shot blasting may suit some coating preparations, but it produces a different profile and is not a polishing process.

Specification framework

Decisions to fix before tender.

01Slab condition

Record strength, flatness, cracks, joints, historic coatings, contamination and repairs before selecting the cut.

02Visual standard

Agree aggregate exposure and sheen separately, with a representative trial including edges and repaired areas.

03Use + safety

Describe wheeled and pedestrian traffic, spill exposure, slip considerations and required cleaning methods.

04Programme

Allow for dust management, phased access, sample approval, protection and handover cleaning.

Delivery method

Surveyed, sampled and delivered in-house.

01

Site survey + substrate review

Condition, flatness, contamination, repairs, access and programme constraints are recorded.

02

Finish specification + sample

Appearance, performance and realistic slab variation are agreed before full installation.

03

Controlled installation

Our specialist team manages preparation, finishing, protection and handover.

Specification questions

Questions to settle early.

Is a ground concrete floor the same as polished concrete?

No. Grinding is a preparation or early refinement stage; a polished finish needs further steps and an agreed appearance and maintenance specification.

Will it be completely stain-proof?

No. Densifiers and protective treatments can improve cleanability, but concrete remains a porous material. Spill response and maintenance still matter.

How should a polished floor be cleaned?

Use the cleaning method and chemistry agreed for the finish; avoid aggressive products and abrasive pads that can damage protection or reduce sheen.
